Recovery Day 6

Matthew 11: 28-30 (RSV) COME to Me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. TAKE My yoke upon you, and LEARN from Me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will FIND rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy, and My burden is light.”

When we read this passage of Scripture, we tend to relate it mostly to the physical and spiritual. However, Jesus is not only addressing physical and spiritual weariness [burdens]. Jesus is also speaking to mental weariness and burdens. Take note that the rest Jesus promises is rest for your soul. Soul rest is mental and emotional rest. Our problem with stress is mostly from an over worked mind and overworked emotions not from excessive muscular activity.

Even when we take time out to “rest”, we find that our physical bodies may be on the bed but our minds are racing through a “worry – maze”. A lot of minds are in overdrive. An overworked mind is a burden. In order to experience full recovery, we must recover our minds. The recovery of the mind is so crucial to retaining and sustaining the gains that God has given us in the other areas of our lives. Otherwise we will experience loss inspite of the recovery.

Physical rest is not enough. You need relief from anxiety, tension, guilt, fear, and bitterness. I find that when people are under pressure or stressed out, not many of such people turn to Christ. Some turn to their television, some open the refrigerator doors seeking comfort, and some go to their mobile phones. But Jesus is saying, “Come to me and I will give you rest for your soul.” True and lasting rest comes from Christ Alone!

Where, who and what do you turn to when you are under pressure?

Prayer: Lord Jesus, I come to You bringing every weariness and the heavy burdens and I lay it down in exchange for rest in my spirit, soul and body, in Jesus Name. Amen!
