The Bible OverBrew - Bible in a Yearഉദാഹരണം
Week 29. Day 3. Psalms 84-89.
Psalm 84 is a beautiful picture of longing to be with God. But in the context of all the surrounding psalms about the exile and the destruction of Jerusalem, it becomes extra poignant! The exile and the destruction of the temple are so tragic, because these effectively mean an end to relationship with God.
Ps 88 is the prayer of an individual going through intense and chronic suffering. It is an important Psalm, because it is just about the only psalm that doesn’t conclude in a postive way: notice the last line. This is still a prayer of faith. This psalm reflects the experience that believers sometimes go through in this broken world.
But in context of book 3 of the psalms, it may also be read as the experience of the nation of Israel.
Ps 89
- v1-37 are very positive. Bonus: can you see which previous scriptures are being referred/alluded to?
- There is then a 180 degree shift. In v38-51, which promises of God is the psalmist saying God has forgotten?
Reflection: As book 3 of the Psalms ends, where have we got to with the hopes of Psalms 1 and 2?
NOTE: Days 1-5 of each week contain the scripture reading for that week. Day 6 has just the 'key chapters'. If you want a briefer version of this plan that still takes you through the whole Bible, you could just read the key chapters featured on day 6. Day 7 has the podcast video where we discuss the week's reading.
