Week 25. Day 3. Nahum.

Nahum is an ‘oracle’ (ESV) [prophecy in NIV] This word is used 5 times in minor prophets, each time concerning destruction of the enemies of God.

Nahum's oracles is against Niniveh, capital of Assyria. Earlier prophecies have already spoken of Niniveh:

  • Habakkuk announces judgment on Nineveh for their ‘endless cruelty’ (3:19)
  • Jonah records how the Ninevites had repented at the preaching of Jonah and received mercy. But this repentance did not last, and in Nahum (100 years after Jonah) they face judgment for all the cruelty they have inflicted on God’s people.

What is the good news for Jerusalem? (1:12-15)

Nahum is full of judgment. Yet the prophet’s name ‘Nahum’ means ‘comfort.’ How do you think these messages of judgment against the surrounding nations would have comforted God’s people back then?

Can you think of how Nahum may be a book of ‘comfort’ to God’s people today?

NOTE: Days 1-5 of each week contain the scripture reading for that week. Day 6 has just the 'key chapters'. If you want a briefer version of this plan that still takes you through the whole Bible, you could just read the key chapters featured on day 6. Day 7 has the podcast video where we discuss the week's reading.
