There’s a rhythm with which God designed us to live. We see this in the very first pages of the Bible—the very first recorded accounts of creation itself. God spent days pouring work into the creation of the world. He made the land and sea. He created and breathed life into the animals and plants. He placed the sun and stars in the sky. He then created us, mankind, and gave us a calling: work to take care of what He’s given us. There, we see the rhythm of work begin. With that, though, we have to remember the other side of this melody of life.
We aren’t meant simply to work; we’re meant to rest. God models this for us in creation as He rested on the final day. God calls us to do the same by honoring the Sabbath. The lesson? When we find our worth in our work, we’re missing an important part of the ebb and flow of life. We’re missing the full calling of God in our lives. We’re missing the value of rest within our work. And we’re missing the chance to find our worth in more than just our work.
Today, spend time in prayer. Thank God for the call to work on your life and ask Him to help you steward it well. Then, thank God for the rhythm of rest built into your life too, and ask Him to help you honor that in the same way.

Like a plant, our root system—our identity—is vitally important to our health. It’s how you see yourself in light of God, others, and the world. It’s what holds you when life changes, threatens, or causes you to question what’s true about you! We’ll look at how a healthy identity rooted in who God is will keep us strong, vibrant, and grounded no matter what comes our way.
