Day 2: You Are Not Invisible

We’ve all had moments where while we are seen physically, we feel invisible. We all have felt hidden in plain sight. Colossians 3:1–3 offers words of life to combat this feeling. For this devotional, let’s focus on verse 3: “Your life is now hidden with Christ in God” (niv). There are two things I want to unpack with you about this verse.

First, because of our relationship with Jesus and His sacrifice on the cross, we are hidden, or buried, with Christ in God. We exchanged our deserved death for His undeserved one; and in His death and resurrection, we die and rise. We now stand hidden behind the legs of Jesus, like a beloved child. When I feel invisible or bereft or lacking, I remind my forgetful heart that I am hidden in the One in whom all spiritual treasures are hidden (Colossians 2:3).

Second, consider the closeness implied in the phrase “with Christ.” Christ’s proximity to His followers is wondrous. Because of what Christ has done, by faith, I am with Him; and because I am with Him, I am in Him. And so are you. We are not invisible; we are with Christ.

This truth settles me; it calms me. We don’t have to hunt for the world’s ways of mattering any longer. Why desire the created over the Creator? We can live generously, toward others and ourselves, escaping the comparison trap and galloping free.

Think of a recent time where you felt invisible. How might applying Colossians 3:3 to the situation have helped you in that moment?

Prayer:

Lord, when I feel invisible, remind me that I am hidden with You. And because I am with You, I am never invisible.
