What God says about pride (2)

There is a story told of Charles H. Spurgeon. One Sunday, he preached a particularly good message. When he finished preaching, the devil came and told him it was really an excellent sermon. For a moment, he agreed with the devil. As he walked from the pulpit, a deacon approached him and said, "Mr. Spurgeon, this was a masterpiece." Spurgeon replied: Friend, you are too late. The devil already told me that a few minutes ago."

Pride finds it hard to pay attention to others, understand the needs of others, and are not really interested in helping those in need. They have little mercy and sympathy for the needs of others.

God constantly warns against pride.

Pride leads to a spiritually superficial life.

Proud people are in awe of themselves.

Former Prime Minister of Israel Golda Meir once said to someone: "Don't try to be humble. You're not that important."

A haughty person finds it impossible to accept criticism but is bold in criticizing others. Arrogant people are fault-finding - from the pastor's sermon to the single-ply serviettes used at your friend's birthday party.

Pride cannot praise others, appreciate their achievements, or give a compliment.

How to get victory over pride

First, understand that you are a sinner.

Secondly, ask: Holy Spirit, show me every form of pride in my heart. Then humble yourself and confess what He shows you.

Thirdly, pray: Lord, reveal Your character to me. Help me understand how and who You are. Reveal Yourself to me so I can see who You are and how my life and actions compare to Your infiniteness.

Fourthly, pride is often a reaction to pain, humiliation, and rejection you have experienced – the lack of positive love and security. Pride's power is broken by understanding God's indescribable love for you, how he sees you, and how he feels about you. Without a deep revelation of God's love for you, it's impossible to be completely free from pride.
