Legacy of Success

Becoming a parent changes your perspective on what truly matters. Before parenthood, you probably never considered that your accomplishments would be the inheritance of your children, and quite possibly, your grandchildren as well.

These achievements become their legacy. A legacy does not consist of just material possessions; it encompasses the values, teachings, and ideals that are passed down through generations.

In the Bible, we see that the legacy parents imparted to their children had a profound impact on their futures. It encompassed the land they owned, the animals they possessed, and their lineage, especially in the case of kings.

In these verses, King David, at the end of his life, imparted invaluable advice to his son, Solomon, sharing crucial insights that would shape his life. These interactions carry various layers: father to son, king to prince, ruler to heir, and disciple to disciple.

David is described as a man after God's own heart (1 Samuel 13:14, Acts 13:22). Solomon is celebrated for his wisdom (1 Kings 5:7, 2 Chronicles 9:1–8). The verses we read in today’s plan stand at the crossroads between one man's legacy and another's.

Carelessly, we might interpret David’s advice as instruction on how to amass material wealth, secure circumstances, and a life of comfort. Such definitions align with the world’s perception of success.

However, David had discovered something far more precious than riches long before he ascended the throne. As a shepherd, in the solitude of the meadows, he encountered God. Upon seeing his heart, the Lord bestowed favor upon David, ultimately making him the renowned king of Israel. God promised David and his descendants the kingdom of Israel because of his simplicity and love for God.

We understand that Solomon grasped the true wealth his father was bequeathing. When God granted Solomon the proverbial “one wish for anything you want,” Solomon chose wisdom over riches or power. He requested wisdom—a godly perspective to rule in accordance with God, just as his father had.

Lord, let me understand, as David and Solomon did, the essence of true success: a life of faith and obedience leading to the discovery of Your purpose for each of us. I want to follow their example and experience genuine success too. Protect me from my own desires, and help me prioritize the pursuit of Your kingdom above all else.
