Day 7: Pursuit of Purpose Over Convenience

Scripture: Matthew 6:33

"But seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you."

Quote from Jordan Peterson: “Pursue what is meaningful, not what is expedient.”

Reimagine the grandeur of ancient Egypt, where Moses, an adopted prince, resided. Within Pharaoh's palace's walls, luxuries abounded. Yet, one day, Moses chose purpose over convenience, a path fraught with challenges, leading his people toward freedom.

Peterson's advice seems a modern echo of Moses' ancient decision. The road to the Promised Land wasn’t the easiest or quickest route, but it was the most meaningful. Moses knew that true fulfillment didn't lie in the temporary comforts of a palace but in leading his people to their destined home.

Sometimes, our daily routines resemble the expedient comforts of Pharaoh’s palace. But, how often do we, like Moses, forsake the immediate for the meaningful?

As I reflect on my own walk with the Lord, I feel nudged to share something from my own personal story. Many of you may not know my personal story, but from the age of 8, I grew up as a preacher’s kid. I knew the church and most of the Bible stories inside and out.

In my 20’s I had a powerful encounter with the Lord while working for a renowned evangelist. In my 30s I was working alongside one of the most powerful Christian leaders in the world and played a significant role in growing one of the most famous Christian brands in the world.

However, in my 40’s I realized my targets were off. My walk with God was on auto-pilot. I was seeking expedient ways to grow my soul. It wasn’t until this year that I really faced off with it. In particular, my view of fasting and praying. I avoided it like the plague. I wanted no part of it. I thought it was reserved for the “weirdo” Christians. I was wrong. I repented.

I decided I needed to pursue what was meaningful. I needed to not just read about Jesus - but do what Jesus did. It changed my life. My encouragement to you is this, “Do the hard things.” Stop pretending, and do what you know you need to do. Don’t wait any longer.

As you reflect on these questions below, my prayer is for the Lord to speak directly to you. Open your heart to what he wants for you. It may be hard, but it’s worth it.

Reflect on these questions.

  • What conveniences hold you back from pursuing your God-given purpose?
  • How can you model Moses' tenacity in your pursuits?
  • Where in your life can you choose meaning over mere expediency?

Affirmation: "I seek God's kingdom and righteousness, choosing the meaningful path He sets before me."
