Thousand-Generation Faithfulness

So now wrap your heart tightly around the hope that lives within us, knowing that God always keeps His promises!

It’s hiding back there in your history. You may not remember it, but it’s there, lurking somewhere in the opening chapters of the story titled “You.” That humiliating betrayal. That defilement of your innocence. That profound violation of trust at the hands of a parent, a teacher, a leader, or a friend—the sting of which prompted you to make a ferocious inner vow:

I will never trust anyone again. I will always be on guard. I will wrap my heart in barbed wire and stuff it with steel wool.

Who among us hasn’t been let down, deeply disappointed, or (figuratively) stabbed in the back by someone close to us? Perhaps this is why so many believers struggle to trust God with their whole being. That inner child still residing in all of us seemingly can’t shake the fear that our trust and innocence will be betrayed again.

Yet this is the same heavenly Father who moved heaven and earth to redeem you—drawing you with cords of love out of a kingdom of hellish darkness, bringing you into His domain of joyous light and love. (Colossians 1:13)

Here’s wonderful news. The God who chose you, wooed you, adopted you, and made you His own can be counted upon. He will never ditch you, betray you, trick you, nor, above all, lie to you. Over and over, the Bible reminds us that God is utterly, infinitely faithful.

Several generations ago, Christian author and teacher, C. J. Sodergren, wrote, “God is indeed faithful. The word ‘faithful’ is repeated often in the Bible precisely so it won’t escape the notice of those who are in need of a faithful God. Every page of the Bible, even where this word is not expressly mentioned, testifies of the faithfulness of God.”

It’s true. Your Father in heaven is utterly, perfectly dependable. He will never leave you nor forsake you. See Deuteronomy 31:6. His love is rooted in the sacred power of covenant, and God keeps His covenant to a thousand generations! See Deuteronomy 7:9.

So, renounce that old inner vow right now. It stands as a barrier between you and countless good and pleasant things that await in communion with your Father. Relax. Trust. Without reservation, rest the full weight of your life and future on His goodness. You belong to a God who is infinitely trustworthy because He is infinitely faithful.

Prayer of Declaration:

Father, You are not a flawed human who can let me down or disappoint me. Your faithfulness is unfathomable. I rest in, rely upon, and rejoice in Your infinite faithfulness. I completely renounce any inner vows I’ve made in the past that would keep my heart from wholly trusting in You.
