Sexy Talk

Now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.
1 Corinthians 13:13

Our friend loved country music. I mean he really loved it. Sometimes he’d go a day without saying a word to his wife as a stream of music wafted through their home. Having asked Leah and I for help in their marriage, we knew about the limited communications between them.

As we met with him alone to get an understanding of what he thought the marital issues were, I asked why he barely spoke with his wife and of course, about the country music. I think we were both shocked at his reply.

He loved his wife like crazy and as he carried on about how deeply he loved her, it became obvious we were missing something in the big picture. He explained that he didn’t know what to say to his wife or how to romance her. The country music songs were what he considered romantic and allowed them to replace the words he wasn’t comfortable expressing. His heart was in one great place, but his head needed a little adjusting.

Building a strong relationship that manifests romance as a fruit of those feelings requires expressing yourself to one another. His lack of what he referred to as “sexy talk” skills wasn’t what attracted his wife to him. It was his deep love and desire to show her his romantic heart in pursuing her. Now, country music only plays in the background.

True Talk:

Is it weird talking about romance with your spouse? To make sure romance isn’t confused with being only physical sex, make the time to talk with each other about what romance means to each other and how you each like to be pursued romantically. A little talking now can lead to a lot of loving later.
