Your Call to Give Wise Counsel

Flip through Proverbs enough times, you'll be reminded to "seek wise counsel."

Seems reasonable, right?

A lesson advising you to seek wise counsel before you make an important decision would be pretty short.

However, how many people do you know who is equipped to actually give wise counsel?

If you're an existing or an emerging leader, you and the leaders you are raising are all expected to be able to give wise counsel.

After all, how often have you thought to yourself, "What I really need now is a foolish leader.”?

Yet, how equipped are you and your other leaders to actually serve others by providing truly wise counsel?

If you're not investing and growing in this area, you're probably providing foolish advice, albeit with good intentions.

Is that what you want to do?

Consider Proverbs 12:18:

The words of the reckless pierce like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.

If you're not delivering wise words that heal, you're hurting the recipient.

The spirit of Ezekiel 3:18 warns that failing to lead someone away from a bad outcome when you can, hurts you.

So what are you going to do about it?

Questions:

  1. How certain are you that you or the leaders around you know how to give wise counsel?  Why?
  2. What is the downside of not intentionally developing the ability to give wise counsel?
