Syria: The Cradle of Civilization

Greater Syria is recognized as the cradle of civilization. Throughout ancient times, it was occupied by several empires, including the Babylonians, Hittites, Assyrians, Sumerians, Amorites, Canaanites, Greeks, Phoenicians, Persians, and Romans. Today it is home to two of the oldest continually inhabited cities in the world: Damascus and Aleppo.

Syria is significant throughout the Bible too. Syrians can trace their heritage back to King Aram, Noah’s grandson. And who doesn’t know the famous road to Damascus, where Jesus met Paul? According to the Book of Acts, believers were first called Christians in ancient Syria. The nation is also important because of the relationship it has had with the nation of Israel.

Although Syria is one of the most ancient inhabited regions on earth, it is now a forsaken home for millions. Since the beginning of Syria’s civil war in 2011, more than 6.7 million people have fled Syria and sought refuge in other countries. Another 6.1 million had been internally displaced as of 2018. Children make up nearly half of the affected population. Tragically, this is what this majestic region is currently known for.

Neighboring and distant countries host millions of traumatized souls with confused minds, broken hearts, and crushed spirits. Fleeing in the middle of bombings, families don’t have the luxury of taking their possessions. They arrive in refugee camps lacking basic necessities, including their identification papers. The only thing these people have is the hope of one day returning home.

Jesus said, “My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life” (John 10:10). In the midst of confusion and uncertainty, the all-loving Father is at work. Even though grieving refugees may not get to fulfill their dream of returning to their homeland, thousands are finding an unfailing hope of an eternal home. Like light in the darkness, Jesus comes to the rescue!

As Jesus was having a heart-to-heart conversation with the disciples before His crucifixion, He comforted them by promising He would return to take them to the Father’s house (John 14:1–14). You might be suffering right now. You might have lost a loved one, or maybe you’re facing harassment, suffering mentally, in conflict with someone close to you, or challenged in your marriage. Whatever you’re struggling with, it is not the end! You can find peace today, knowing that by His blood, Jesus has written a new start for all who believe in Him! Understanding that our life on this earth represents a tiny part of our existence can shift our attention away from the temporary things that might consume us to what is eternal. Positions, possessions, work, degrees, opinions, religion, appearance, decisions—none of these are eternal. But God, His Word, and your soul are. Invest your time, energy, and resources in things eternal.
