Let There Be Wonder by Matt Redmanഉദാഹരണം
MERCIES (NEW EVERY MORNING)
“The Lord’s love never ends; His mercies never stop. They are new every morning…”
Lamentation 3:22-23 NCV
We woke up this morning and we were still breathing – every one of those breaths is a brand new mercy – an undeserved gift flowing straight from the heart of our Father. And every single one is an invitation for us to worship.
One thing I love about singing is that it’s such a mindful way of giving those breaths back to God. Most of the time we’re not really conscious of the function of inhaling and exhaling, let alone being mindful enough to purposely turn those constant gifts of life into offerings of thanks and praise. But when we sing in worship it is different - we take in the breath He supplies, through the lungs He gave us, and then very consciously and mindfully exhale them straight back to Him in love and praise.
Both the Old and New Testaments tell us of a ‘new song’. In Psalm 40:3 the worshipper declares, “He put a new song in my mouth”. Then skip to the last book of the bible and in Revelation 5:9 we read, “and they sang a new song.” The fact is, we will always have new songs, because there will always be new mercies. The goodness and mercy God will surely follow us not only through this earthly life, but for the whole of eternity – and we shall forever be finding new ways to tell Jesus just how much we treasure Him, in all His goodness and greatness.
The song “Mercies (New Every Morning)” from my new album is both a new song and an old one. The verses and bridge are fresh additions, but the chorus, as you will likely recognise, has been adapted from the beautiful old song ‘The Steadfast Love of the Lord’, originally written by Edith McNeill in 1974. It’s a chorus that millions of hearts all around the world have sung – and while we’ll always treasure the original version, it was so kind of the song publisher to let us put our own little spin on it for this version. It’s a song that celebrates the never ceasing grace and kindness of God – a grace that shows up in our lives every single day. It shows up in the gift of our creation – in the very blood that pulses through our veins. And it shows up too in the gift of our salvation – in the blood that ran down the head, the hands, the feet and the side of our glorious Saviour.
We will always be a singing people, and there will always be a new song to be sung – for His worth is so great, and His mercies are new every morning.
