Who Has Your Heart?

Idols were meant to distract you.

“To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:” Ecclesiastes 3:1 KJV

Our lives are filled with assignments, tasks, duties and various responsibilities. Many times these assignments and tasks are necessary for our productivity, health and our well being. Whether that’s working on a business, building a career, investing in your family or leading an organization, these “things”, although good, can turn into idols if they are not placed in proper context and in the appropriate priority.

The Bible states, in Matthew 6:33 KJV, “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” We are to seek and to worship God. We are not to worship God in order to acquire these “things”. In fact, when you solely focus on and exalt the accumulation of these “things” rather than developing an intimate relationship with God, you’ll begin to worship the gift rather than worshipping the Giver of the gift — God.

If we’re not careful, these “things”, can magnify themselves above our relationship with God. Anyone or anything that competes with God serves as an idol and idols have no place in God’s Presence. Crush them or God will.

A false god, or an idol, is someone or something that you worship, revere or give your heart over to in the place of God — a God substitute. Although you may not be worshipping a golden calf or a pagan wooden statue or a physical object, you may be exalting the importance of “things” to a ‘god-like’ level.

These “things” have the same “worship weight”, in your heart, as God Himself. If these “things” in your life are not properly categorized, they can occupy your innermost thoughts, consume your time, thwart your desires, and derail your Purpose. Sometimes, you can spend so much time working on or focusing on a “thing” that you neglect spending time with the One who gave you the gift, opportunity, family or the prominent position in the first place.

Remember, God is the One who gave you the gift. God is the One who promoted you. God is the one who expanded you. God is the One who enlarged you. God gave you the job. God gave you the spouse. God gave you your family. God is the One who gave you the opportunity. Who has your heart... God or the gift? Who is your God?
