A Loyal Heart
As Christian parents we try to do the best we can to prepare our kids for the lives they will eventually lead on their own. We work hard to provide the necessities of life such as a home, food, and clothing. Our role is to teach them life skills and give them responsibilities as they grow to train them for challenges they may face in life. But all of this would not matter much if we were not praying for and teaching our children to have a loyal heart towards God.
The word loyal is defined as “unswerving in allegiance towards something or someone.” We see loyalty modeled in marriages, in friendships, and in jobs. However, loyalty to God is the most important lesson we can pass down to our children. A loyal heart towards God inspires a person to keep His commandments and leads them to fulfillment of God’s plan for their lives.
This is why David was so diligent in praying for his son, Solomon, and teaching him what it means to be loyal towards God.
“As for you, my son Solomon, know the God of your father, and serve Him with a loyal heart and with a willing mind; for the Lord searches all hearts and understands all the intent of the thoughts. If you seek Him, He will be found by you; but if you forsake Him, He will cast you off forever.”—1 Chronicles 28:9 (NKJV)
David knew that if Solomon did not serve God with a loyal heart He was in danger of being cast off forever. Knowing this truth today, we need to be praying all the more earnestly for our kids to have a loyal heart towards God so they can fulfill the plan that God has for them.
