Time Management

“We can make our plans, but the Lord determines our steps” (Proverbs 16:9 NLT).

Interruptions: the bane of a mother’s existence. Can’t finish one thing because ten others are crammed into the overstuffed queue, often perpetrated by little people swarming like buzzing bees, stinging your last nerve.

Scripture that’s enabled me to handle interruptions better is the story Jesus told in Luke 10:25-37.

Verse 33: “But a Samaritan, who was on a journey, came upon him [the traveler beaten by robbers]; and when he saw him, he felt compassion, (34) and came to him and bandaged up his wounds … and he put him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. (35) On the next day, he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper and said, ‘Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, when I return, I will repay you.’” (NASB)

How does this passage relate to interrupted schedules?

  • He  saw him (33): Compassion  usually begins with the eyes; you can’t care till you’re aware. You must  see—and often personally experience—a problem before your heart is  engaged. Papa God uses unscheduled divine appointments (interruptions) to  divert our eyes from relentless to-do lists toward what’s really important.
  • He came to him (34): It’s easier to ignore problems when you keep your distance. But once you step up and embrace the obstruction, you’ll begin to feel the Holy Spirit’s elbow jab of guidance.
  • The Samaritan took care of him. This dude was not likely a career health care professional galloping off to a medical convention; he probably had no more emergency wound care training than you or I, but he did whatever he could.
  • I will repay you (35):  There’s a cost for kindness—are we willing to pay it? Might be money, time, or emotional energy. Although he had his own pressing agenda, the Samaritan saw. He felt. He stopped.

Face it sister-mom, interruptions are part of your Creator’s to-do list for your life. View them as opportunities to serve others.

Additional Elements:

BFF Prayer: Ever patient Father, I need a better her-spective about interruptions. Remind me daily that Your agenda is my agenda. And You’re standing by to bless my mess. Amen.
