Who Do You Play For?
Jimmy Page
SET:
When the U.S. Olympic hockey team beat the Soviets and went on to win the gold medal in 1980, coach Herb Brooks said, “It’s about the name on the front of the jersey, not the name on the back.”
As you compete for Christ, remember whom you play for and represent. When you wear your jersey, you represent your team. But there is a name even bigger than your team name: Jesus. His name is above all names, and He is worth living for!
I am the Light of the world. In John 8:12, Jesus tells us we will never walk in darkness. His word is a lamp for our feet and a light for our paths. He calls us to follow Him and trust His direction for our lives.
I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life. In John 14:6, Jesus makes it clear that He is the only path to eternal life. No one comes to the Father except through Jesus. There are many paths that may lead to a good life, but only one leads to eternal life.
I am the true vine. In John 15:5, Jesus tells us He is the very source of our lives. We must seek Him and remain in constant connection with Him. Otherwise, we can do nothing that lasts.
As a competitor, you play for Jesus. When you put on your jersey, the name on the front is JESUS. Remember, play for the name on the front, not the back!
GO:
1. Are you competing for your own glory and success, or for the success of the team?
2. Are you competing to please God or people?
WORKOUT:
Galatians 1:10–11
Exodus 3:13–14
OVERTIME:
"Father, thank You for the opportunity to compete for the glory of Your name. Help me to represent You well with my words, attitudes, effort, and actions as I compete. Amen."
