Psalms 105:21-45

Psalms 105:16-45 The Message (MSG)

Then he called down a famine on the country, he broke every last blade of wheat. But he sent a man on ahead: Joseph, sold as a slave. They put cruel chains on his ankles, an iron collar around his neck, Until God’s word came to the Pharaoh, and GOD confirmed his promise. God sent the king to release him. The Pharaoh set Joseph free; He appointed him master of his palace, put him in charge of all his business To personally instruct his princes and train his advisors in wisdom. Then Israel entered Egypt, Jacob immigrated to the Land of Ham. God gave his people lots of babies; soon their numbers alarmed their foes. He turned the Egyptians against his people; they abused and cheated God’s servants. Then he sent his servant Moses, and Aaron, whom he also chose. They worked marvels in that spiritual wasteland, miracles in the Land of Ham. He spoke, “Darkness!” and it turned dark— they couldn’t see what they were doing. He turned all their water to blood so that all their fish died; He made frogs swarm through the land, even into the king’s bedroom; He gave the word and flies swarmed, gnats filled the air. He substituted hail for rain, he stabbed their land with lightning; He wasted their vines and fig trees, smashed their groves of trees to splinters; With a word he brought in locusts, millions of locusts, armies of locusts; They consumed every blade of grass in the country and picked the ground clean of produce; He struck down every firstborn in the land, the first fruits of their virile powers. He led Israel out, their arms filled with loot, and not one among his tribes even stumbled. Egypt was glad to have them go— they were scared to death of them. God spread a cloud to keep them cool through the day and a fire to light their way through the night; They prayed and he brought quail, filled them with the bread of heaven; He opened the rock and water poured out; it flowed like a river through that desert— All because he remembered his Covenant, his promise to Abraham, his servant. Remember this! He led his people out singing for joy; his chosen people marched, singing their hearts out! He made them a gift of the country they entered, helped them seize the wealth of the nations So they could do everything he told them— could follow his instructions to the letter.

Psalms 105:21-45 King James Version (KJV)

He made him lord of his house, And ruler of all his substance: To bind his princes at his pleasure; And teach his senators wisdom. Israel also came into Egypt; And Jacob sojourned in the land of Ham. And he increased his people greatly; And made them stronger than their enemies. He turned their heart to hate his people, To deal subtilly with his servants. He sent Moses his servant; And Aaron whom he had chosen. They shewed his signs among them, And wonders in the land of Ham. He sent darkness, and made it dark; And they rebelled not against his word. He turned their waters into blood, And slew their fish. Their land brought forth frogs in abundance, In the chambers of their kings. He spake, and there came divers sorts of flies, And lice in all their coasts. He gave them hail for rain, And flaming fire in their land. He smote their vines also and their fig trees; And brake the trees of their coasts. He spake, and the locusts came, and caterpillers, and that without number, And did eat up all the herbs in their land, and devoured the fruit of their ground. He smote also all the firstborn in their land, The chief of all their strength. He brought them forth also with silver and gold: And there was not one feeble person among their tribes. Egypt was glad when they departed: For the fear of them fell upon them. He spread a cloud for a covering; And fire to give light in the night. The people asked, and he brought quails, And satisfied them with the bread of heaven. He opened the rock, and the waters gushed out; They ran in the dry places like a river. For he remembered his holy promise, And Abraham his servant. And he brought forth his people with joy, And his chosen with gladness: And gave them the lands of the heathen: And they inherited the labour of the people; That they might observe his statutes, And keep his laws. Praise ye the LORD.

He made him lord of his house And ruler over all his possessions, To imprison his princes at will, That he might teach his elders wisdom. Israel also came into Egypt; Thus Jacob sojourned in the land of Ham. And He caused His people to be very fruitful, And made them stronger than their adversaries. He turned their heart to hate His people, To deal craftily with His servants. He sent Moses His servant, And Aaron, whom He had chosen. They performed His wondrous acts among them, And miracles in the land of Ham. He sent darkness and made it dark; And they did not rebel against His words. He turned their waters into blood And caused their fish to die. Their land swarmed with frogs Even in the chambers of their kings. He spoke, and there came a swarm of flies And gnats in all their territory. He gave them hail for rain, And flaming fire in their land. He struck down their vines also and their fig trees, And shattered the trees of their territory. He spoke, and locusts came, And young locusts, even without number, And ate up all vegetation in their land, And ate up the fruit of their ground. He also struck down all the firstborn in their land, The first fruits of all their vigor. Then He brought them out with silver and gold, And among His tribes there was not one who stumbled. Egypt was glad when they departed, For the dread of them had fallen upon them. He spread a cloud for a covering, And fire to illumine by night. They asked, and He brought quail, And satisfied them with the bread of heaven. He opened the rock and water flowed out; It ran in the dry places like a river. Psalms 105:21-45 New Century Version (NCV)

He made him the master of his house; Joseph was in charge of his riches. He could order the princes as he wished. He taught the older men to be wise. Then his father Israel came to Egypt; Jacob lived in Egypt. The LORD made his people grow in number, and he made them stronger than their enemies. He caused the Egyptians to hate his people and to make plans against his servants. Then he sent his servant Moses, and Aaron, whom he had chosen. They did many signs among the Egyptians and worked wonders in Egypt. The LORD sent darkness and made the land dark, but the Egyptians turned against what he said. So he changed their water into blood and made their fish die. Then their country was filled with frogs, even in the bedrooms of their rulers. The LORD spoke and flies came, and gnats were everywhere in the country. He made hail fall like rain and sent lightning through their land. He struck down their grapevines and fig trees, and he destroyed every tree in the country. He spoke and grasshoppers came; the locusts were too many to count. They ate all the plants in the land and everything the earth produced. The LORD also killed all the firstborn sons in the land, the oldest son of each family. Then he brought his people out, and they carried with them silver and gold. Not one of his people stumbled. The Egyptians were glad when they left, because the Egyptians were afraid of them. The LORD covered them with a cloud and lit up the night with fire. When they asked, he brought them quail and filled them with bread from heaven. God split the rock, and water flowed out; it ran like a river through the desert. He remembered his holy promise to his servant Abraham. So God brought his people out with joy, his chosen ones with singing. He gave them lands of other nations, so they received what others had worked for. This was so they would keep his orders and obey his teachings. Praise the LORD!

Then Israel entered Egypt; Jacob resided as a foreigner in the land of Ham. The LORD made his people very fruitful; he made them too numerous for their foes, whose hearts he turned to hate his people, to conspire against his servants. Then he struck down all the firstborn in their land, the firstfruits of all their manhood. He brought out Israel, laden with silver and gold, and from among their tribes no one faltered. Egypt was glad when they left, because dread of Israel had fallen on them. He spread out a cloud as a covering, and a fire to give light at night. They asked, and he brought them quail; he fed them well with the bread of heaven. He opened the rock, and water gushed out; it flowed like a river in the desert. For he remembered his holy promise given to his servant Abraham. He brought out his people with rejoicing, his chosen ones with shouts of joy; he gave them the lands of the nations, and they fell heir to what others had toiled for— that they might keep his precepts and observe his laws.

He made Joseph lord of his house And ruler of all his possessions, [Gen 41:40] To imprison his princes at his will, That he might teach his elders wisdom. Israel also came into Egypt; Thus Jacob sojourned in the land of Ham. [Gen 46:6] There the LORD greatly increased [the number of] His people, And made them more powerful than their enemies. ¶He turned the heart [of the Egyptians] to hate His people, To deal craftily with His servants. He sent Moses His servant, And Aaron, whom He had chosen. They exhibited His wondrous signs among them, Great miracles in the land of Ham (Egypt). He sent [thick, oppressive] darkness and made the land dark; And Moses and Aaron did not rebel against His words. [Ex 10:22; Ps 99:7] He turned Egypt’s waters into blood And caused their fish to die. [Ex 7:20, 21] Their land swarmed with frogs, Even in the chambers of their kings. [Ex 8:6] He spoke, and there came swarms of flies And gnats in all their territory. [Ex 8:17, 24] He gave them hail for rain, With flaming fire in their land. [Ex 9:23, 25] He struck their vines also and their fig trees, And shattered the [ice-laden] trees of their territory. [Ps 78:47] He spoke, and the [migratory] locusts came, And the young locusts, even without number, [Ex 10:4, 13, 14] And ate up all the vegetation in their land, And devoured the fruit of their ground. He also struck down all the firstborn in their land, The first fruits and chief substance of all their strength. [Ex 12:29; Ps 78:51] ¶He brought the sons of Israel out [of Egypt] with silver and gold, And among their tribes there was not one who stumbled. [Ex 12:35] Egypt was glad when they departed, For the dread and fear of them had fallen on the Egyptians. [Ex 12:33] The LORD spread a cloud as a covering [by day], And a fire to illumine the night. [Ex 13:21] The Israelites asked, and He brought quail, And satisfied them with the bread of heaven. [Ex 16:12-15] He opened the rock and water flowed out; It ran in the dry places like a river. Praise the LORD! (Hallelujah!)

Psalms 105:21-45 New Living Translation (NLT)

Joseph was put in charge of all the king’s household; he became ruler over all the king’s possessions. He could instruct the king’s aides as he pleased and teach the king’s advisers. Then Israel arrived in Egypt; Jacob lived as a foreigner in the land of Ham. And the LORD multiplied the people of Israel until they became too mighty for their enemies. Then he turned the Egyptians against the Israelites, and they plotted against the LORD’s servants. But the LORD sent his servant Moses, along with Aaron, whom he had chosen. They performed miraculous signs among the Egyptians, and wonders in the land of Ham. The LORD blanketed Egypt in darkness, for they had defied his commands to let his people go. He turned their water into blood, poisoning all the fish. Then frogs overran the land and even invaded the king’s bedrooms. When the LORD spoke, flies descended on the Egyptians, and gnats swarmed across Egypt. He sent them hail instead of rain, and lightning flashed over the land. He ruined their grapevines and fig trees and shattered all the trees. He spoke, and hordes of locusts came— young locusts beyond number. They ate up everything green in the land, destroying all the crops in their fields. Then he killed the oldest son in each Egyptian home, the pride and joy of each family. The LORD brought his people out of Egypt, loaded with silver and gold; and not one among the tribes of Israel even stumbled. Egypt was glad when they were gone, for they feared them greatly. The LORD spread a cloud above them as a covering and gave them a great fire to light the darkness. They asked for meat, and he sent them quail; he satisfied their hunger with manna—bread from heaven. He split open a rock, and water gushed out to form a river through the dry wasteland. For he remembered his sacred promise to his servant Abraham. So he brought his people out of Egypt with joy, his chosen ones with rejoicing. He gave his people the lands of pagan nations, and they harvested crops that others had planted. All this happened so they would follow his decrees and obey his instructions.

Psalms 105:21-45 The Passion Translation (TPT)

Then Joseph was put in charge of everything under the king; he became the master of the palace over all the royal possessions. Pharoah gave him authority over all the princes of the land, and Joseph became the teacher of wisdom to the king’s advisers. Then Jacob, with all of Joseph’s family, came from Canaan to Egypt and settled in Goshen. God made them very fruitful, and they multiplied incredibly until they were greater in number than those who ruled them. God turned their hearts to hate his people and to deal treacherously with his servants. But he sent them his faithful servant, Moses, the deliverer, and chose Aaron to accompany him. Their command brought down signs and wonders, working miracles in Egypt. By God’s direction, they spoke and released a plague of thick darkness over the land. God turned their rivers to blood, causing every fish to die. And the judgment-plague of frogs came in enormous numbers, swarming everywhere, even into Pharaoh’s bedroom! God spoke and another plague was released— massive swarms of flies, vast clouds of insects, covered the land. God rained down hail and flaming fire upon Egypt. Their gardens and vines were all destroyed, shattering trees into splinters throughout the territory. God spoke, and devouring hordes of locusts swept over the land, picking the ground clean of vegetation and crops. Then God struck down their firstborn sons, the pride and joy of every Egyptian family. At last, God freed all the Hebrews from their slavery and sent them away laden with the silver and gold of Egypt. And not even one was feeble on their way out! Egypt was relieved at their exodus, ready to see them go, for the terror of the Lord of the Hebrews had fallen upon them! God spread out a cloud as shade as they moved ahead and a cloud of fire to light up their night. Moses prayed and God brought them quail to eat. He satisfied them with heaven’s bread falling from the sky. He broke open the boulder and the waters poured out like a river in the desert. For God could never forget his holy promise to his servant Abraham. So God brought out his chosen ones with singing; with a joyful shout they were set free! He gave them lands and nations, just like he promised. Fruitful lands of crops they had never planted were now theirs. All this was done for them so that they would be faithful to keep the ways of God, obeying his laws and following his truths. Hallelujah! Praise the Lord!
