GLUTTONY
You know the old saying, “Too much of a good thing is not a good thing?” So true! In our world, too much of a good thing seems impossible.
We live in a culture where if a little is good, more is better. We want everything to be faster, bigger, and better. Westerners are blessed to live in the land of plenty, but the land of plenty is slowly becoming a land of sickness and disease due to our overconsumption.
Affluence and comfortable living breed false security, and with false security, we fail to consider the ongoing impact of our comfortable lifestyles.
Gluttony is defined as habitual greed or excessive eating. They are one and the same.
Maybe your overeating habits started in childhood when you weren’t sure where your next meal was coming from. Out of uncertainty and perhaps anxiety, you ate and ate with abandon, ensuring that you got some food before it was gone. Maybe it was every person for themselves in your home, and you ate simply out of a desire for more. Greed ruled your choices.
Or maybe you lost rational thought when you saw a chocolate cake: If one piece of cake was good, then two were even better. Seeking pleasure through excess drove your decision-making.
The Wellness Revelation is a battle cry for vigilance against greed and excess.
It is a recognition that our excess has led to suffering – both our own and others.
It is an attempt to open our eyes to the injustice that surrounds us: the injustice that people who have are dying from too much of a good thing, while others who don’t have are dying because we refuse to play a complete role in God’s story – a role that would cost us our comfort.
Reflect:
What does Proverbs 23:20-21 have to say about gluttony? Gluttony means “excess in eating or drinking.” How is it that poverty can result from gluttony?
