Lent Guide: In the Shadow of Gethsemane

DAY 38 OF 39

Aware of Him

… keep watch with me. Matthew 26:38

In the story we are living with, we have come to know something of the nature and content of the consciousness that Jesus lived with. He had a clear, open and comprehensive broad consciousness. He was always aware of His Father’s presence and work in His life. He says that He is in the Father, and the Father in Him. He does nothing unless He hears it from the Father.

Being aware doesn’t mean that you are constantly focused and thinking about something specific. That is not an open consciousness, but a focused, and thus narrow consciousness. If you are home, for example, and your life partner isn’t there, the place feels different. You’re not constantly thinking about the fact that you’re alone, but you’re constantly aware of it, nonetheless. Peter says:

“Your life is a journey you must travel with a deep consciousness of God.” (1Thes 5 MSG).

I am invited to live with a deep consciousness of Him. Everywhere and all the time… conscious of Him. This consciousness is established over time – as we learn how to pray. Paul says:

All I want is for you to be able to develop a way of life in which you can spend plenty of time together with the Master without a lot of distractions.” (1 Cor 7:35 MSG). To develop this consciousness, I need a certain place and time, sometimes with intensity, and sometimes without, to pray.

Jesus’ last command to the disciples who fell asleep was to “train others in this way of life and… instruct them in this practice.” (Matt 28:17,20 MSG). That is what the disciples did, by writing down everything He said to them. They are teaching us now through the stories we read.

Exercise

  • Ask Him to make you aware (let you see, notice, realise, be reminded) of…

-How my way of living contributes to the consciousness I live with

-What I can leave or start doing that can help me to start living with a greater consciousness of Him

Prayer: I ask for a deep consciousness of Your love and work in my life.
