Lent Guide: In the Shadow of Gethsemane

DAY 37 OF 39

Get up!

Why are you sleeping? Get up… Luke 22:46

Create an image in your mind of the story we are journeying with and imagine that you are there. Jesus comes to you, He finds you… always. He has so much going on and still, he chooses to come to you. He longs for you to live His life with Him. That your dreams, feelings, principles, imagination, and sensibility would be like His. He so wants you to live with His consciousness – because that is life!

It is a great gift if He comes to us and wakes us up. It’s not to make us aware of how bad we are. It’s an invitation to more, to better. To become aware that I am sleeping is huge! If I don’t know that I’m sleeping, I’ll never want it another way. I can’t wake up myself. Therefore, my only hope is in Him. I can ask Him to wake me up for Him. I ask Him to make me conscious of Him. When I become aware that I have fallen asleep, I can turn to Him and tell Him this is how I will live if He doesn’t wake me up.

It is also good to become aware of what I do with my pain and worry. We avoid and anaesthetise ourselves through activities and substances, which put us asleep by having us break with a direct, open, expanded consciousness. When we become aware of what we are doing, we can pray and ask Him to help us with this. By admitting our escapism and committing it to Him, we open the door to awakening.

Exercise

  • Ask Him to remind you of His presence and love in your life throughout the day ahead. Smile if something happens that reminds you of Him.
  • Find something you will carry with you today to remind you of Him.

Prayer: I ask for a deep consciousness of Your love and work in my life.
