Lent Guide: In the Shadow of Gethsemane

DAY 35 OF 39

Keep watch

Jesus wakes His sleeping followers. Get that image in your head for a few moments and sit with it. He wants to wake His followers, and make them aware of what is actually happening. Of the Father’s love and presence and work – here, now, in and through them. Their lives aren’t small, but they can’t see that they’re a part of something big that is happening.

Messengers are constantly sent from God to wake us up. In many of our experiences, there is a message with the potential to wake us up. We ignore, avoid, or disdain a lot of these experiences and that can cause a lot of disruption in our inner world. A divorce, financial setback, the death of a loved one, or mental health issue has great evasive power.

Not only the negative experiences, but also the positive ones – the birth of a child, great intense love, a dream, physical things like change, breath – all these can be messengers. Instead of turning around and continuing to sleep, carrying on as before, we can wake up. Decide to react, to listen and to watch. We awaken by reacting to the messages that come to us. A whole new world opens to us and the angel gives us new energy with which to live.

Exercise

  • Ask Him to make you aware of the messengers He sends to wake you up.
  • Reflect for a few moments on the wonderful and challenging things happening in your life. Look at the experiences as messengers and let them take you to the Sender of the message.
  • Talk to Him about what you think and feel about the messengers and share your intentions with Him.

Prayer: I ask for a deep consciousness of Your love and work in my life.
