Faith When the Future Is Uncertain

When we turn to God, he definitely grants us insights that we otherwise wouldn’t have. But he doesn’t always spell everything out from the get-go. Especially in situations when he reveals each next step as we move forward in faith, we need to place our trust in him and believe that his wisdom and ways will work for what is ultimately the best outcome for us.

This is how Esther had to operate when she became King Xerxes’ new queen (Esther 2:15–18). When her husband approved an order to annihilate the Jews—which included Esther, though she had not disclosed her ethnicity—her cousin Mordecai begged Esther to do what she could to intervene on behalf of her people (4:13–14).

Esther’s cousin had faith in the future deliverance of his people; he just wasn’t sure whether he and his cousin would be spared. Esther shared his ambivalence but bravely decided to risk her own life to save her people. Trusting God to guide her though the future was uncertain, Esther laid out her request to the king in a way that reflected heavenly wisdom. Her obedience led to the salvation of the Jewish people from Xerxes’ order.

Father, thank you for providing a godly example of trust and wisdom in Esther. Help me emulate her bold faith and follow your guidance with each next step. You desire to fulfill all your promises of protection and joy for us, and I know you will work powerfully through my obedience. Amen.
