Inside the Tomb: A Holy Week DevotionalSample
DAY 5: MAUNDY THURSDAY
Maundy Thursday commemorates the Last Supper Jesus shared with His disciples and His commandment to love one another, encapsulated in the act of washing His disciples' feet. This evening is marked by intimacy, instruction, and impending betrayal. Jesus, knowing the end is near, chooses to demonstrate servanthood and humility in a profoundly counter-cultural act: washing the feet of His followers.
This gesture, typically reserved for the lowest servant, highlights the upside-down kingdom Jesus came to establish, where the greatest are like the least, and leaders are servants. Through this, Jesus sets an example for us, calling us to a life of humility and service.
The Last Supper also institutes the Communion, a central element of our worship. In breaking bread and sharing wine, Jesus foreshadows His sacrifice on the cross, offering His body and blood for the life of the world. This moment invites us to reflect on sacrifice, community, and the new covenant between God and humanity through Christ.
Maundy Thursday challenges us to embrace servanthood, to love as Jesus loved, and to remember the sacrifice He made for our salvation. As we partake in Communion, let's renew our commitment to live out the love and humility Christ showed us, making it the hallmark of our lives as His followers.
REFLECTION QUESTIONS
1. How can I incorporate Jesus' example of servanthood and humility into my daily life?
2. What does the act of Communion mean to me, and how does it shape my understanding of community and sacrifice?
