Inside the Tomb: A Holy Week DevotionalSample
DAY 1: PALM SUNDAY
Palm Sunday marks a pivotal moment in Christian history and the start of Holy Week. It commemorates Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem, an event rich with symbolism and prophetic fulfillment. As Jesus rides into the city on a donkey, He fulfills the prophecy from Zechariah 9:9, portraying a king who comes in peace rather than war. The crowds greet Him with palm branches and shouts of "Hosanna," a term that means “save us, please!" They recognize Him as their Messiah, yet their expectations are more earthly – a political savior. This moment contrasts sharply with what is to unfold in the coming week.
Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem teaches us about the nature of His kingdom. Unlike earthly rulers, His reign is marked by humility, peace, and salvation. The donkey symbolizes this peaceful kingship. In a world where power is often exercised through force and dominance, Jesus presents an alternative model of leadership and authority.
Palm Sunday is also a day of reflection on the nature of our own discipleship. The same crowd that shouts “Hosanna” will, in a few days, cry “Crucify Him!” This challenges us to consider the consistency and depth of our commitment to Jesus. Are we fair-weather followers, or are we committed to Jesus even when it leads to the cross?
Moreover, Palm Sunday invites us to reflect on our own expectations of Jesus. Do we seek Him for the blessings and solutions He can provide for our earthly problems, or are we willing to follow Him into the spiritual and sometimes challenging journey He calls us to?
As we enter this Holy Week, let’s embrace the humility and peace of Jesus. Let’s commit to a discipleship that doesn’t waver with circumstances but remains steadfast in faith and obedience. Let this day be a reminder of the true King we serve – a King who came to serve and to give His life for many.
REFLECTION QUESTIONS
1. How does Jesus' entry into Jerusalem challenge your understanding of true leadership and power?
2. In what ways can you actively acknowledge Jesus as King in your own life and not be led by circumstance?
