[Difference Makers] Courage

DAY 3 OF 6

Difference Makers Have Courage

The Gospel of Mark also tells the story of the paralyzed man. It states his friends had to lower him through the roof to get him close to Jesus. Sometimes we can help others get close to Jesus, as these men did. The paralyzed man’s friends lowered him, and Jesus said to the man, “Have courage.”

Difference makers live with courage. We live in a society in which there is a lot to fear. A week or so ago, I took my kids to see a movie. As we went out the door, my wife said, “Have fun at the movie. Be safe.” The moment my kids and I sat down in the movie theatre, I asked, “Where are the exits? Who is around? What is going on?” Being aware of your surroundings is smart. We live in a dangerous place and time. In today’s society, we need great courage.

Crime and strife are on the news all the time. But what if there were no sin? There would be no crime; much trouble and disease would disappear. Sin rips us apart, but God brings us together. Jesus forgave the paralyzed man’s sins and told him to have courage. Difference makers are forgiven sinners who have the courage to change as God works in their hearts and minds.

A triangle is a symbol used to represent the Trinity: God the Father, Jesus the Son, the Holy Spirit. A triangle is used for delta, the fourth letter of Greek alphabet. In mathematics, a triangle stands for change. To help us to change, God uses the Bible. He speaks to us through His Word, He speaks to us through His Spirit, and He speaks to us through His people—generally in that order. Often, we ask His people for advice before we consult the Bible. We ask our friends, “What do you think?” When we hear the answer we like, then we go to the Bible to look for a verse to justify what our friends said. That is not the way to rightly relate to God. Start with the Word. Ask the Lord to confirm His Word with the Holy Spirit. And then ask Him to confirm His Word and Spirit with the wise counsel of His people.

Pray: God, grant me the courage to walk according to Your Word, with Your Spirit, and with Your people.

Day 2Day 4

About this Plan

[Difference Makers] Courage

Make a difference for Christ. Spiritual transformation begins with the heart, results in a changed attitude, and leads to action that motivates others to glorify God. To be a difference maker, listen to Jesus: have courage, confront sin, grow in faith, and walk in the Spirit. This six-day series will encourage and empower you to begin making a difference as you learn, pray, obey, go, and give in Christ’s love.
