Down to Earth: A Christmas Devotional Journey

DAY 5 OF 25

Day 5: Our God is an Awesome God

Reflection

According to the Lego Movie theme tune, "Everything is awesome." (If you don’t know the song, it’s an earworm. Look it up. You’re welcome – or possibly I’m sorry.)

"Awesome" is one of those overused words. It’s become a pretty ordinary expression of pleasure, far removed from its true meaning. "Awe" is the sensation of being completely overwhelmed, sometimes even terrified, by the sheer magnitude and magnificence of something or someone much greater than ourselves. Few things in our world are genuinely worthy of being called awesome.

But it’s rightly the way the psalmist describes God: "The Lord Most High is awesome." God is the Unrivaled, Supreme Ruler over everything; the Great King over all the Earth. He’s the God of every nation. There isn’t one place in the Universe or one person over whom God doesn’t completely rule. We feel awe when we recognize just how small and insignificant we are compared to Him.

And yet, despite this, God pours His Amazing Love out on you and me. We’re to celebrate and delight in our God, our King because He is Great, He is Good – and He loves us. That’s Good News worth celebrating. "Clap your hands, all you nations; shout to God with cries of joy."

In Jesus, God loves us enough to come down to Earth, to be with us in our smallness and insignificance, to veil His Awesomeness and become poor, to become one of us. To show the kind of Awesome King He is in coming to save us.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, You are Awesome. May I live today in a way that honors You and shows how Great You are.
