God’s Will Is Above All
ABOVE HIS MOTHER
MAIN IDEAS:
• Jesus obeyed His earthly parents and listened to His mother up to a point, but He was ready to obey the heavenly Father at any moment, this being His actual mission on earth.
• Mary, Jesus’ mother, was a woman who obeyed God and put herself at His disposal, but according to the biblical Word, her mission regarding the plan to save mankind came to an end with Jesus’ death; He entrusted her to John to care for her when she grew old.
• Jesus gets involved in solving a problem if He is asked to, if He is believed and obeyed, and if the work He is asked to do is a pure one, that contains no compromise.
JESUS’ first mission brings to our attention the relationship between Him and His mother. We must understand this aspect, especially in the context in which a good portion of Christianity is inclined to pray to JESUS’ mother rather than to Him. This attitude is in no way supported by the way JESUS related to His mother; it is not faith, but idolatry. Mary’s intervention proves that up to that moment, JESUS had performed other miracles as well in His family’s house, otherwise, Mary wouldn’t have known that He could make such things come true. This crisis makes Mary give away what JESUS was in their family. That doesn’t mean that from that moment on, JESUS was always at His mother’s disposal. On the contrary, before He was crucified, He entrusted her to John’s care, for the days of old age. The Bible contains no proof of the fact that Mary might have received from GOD any special status as a mediator between us and JESUS. Mary’s advice for the servants in this situation was to obey JESUS and her humility and obedience led to a miracle and solving a problem.
Just as JESUS put the relationship with GOD and obedience to Him first, we should also obey GOD and JESUS. To lift Mary, the mother of JESUS, to a level where we should worship her is wrong, non-biblical, and idolatrous.
