The Foundation for Diva-hood
Wealthy and powerful in her own right, the Queen of Sheba went on a pilgrimage to meet King Solomon of Israel. Having heard astonishing reports about his wisdom, she went to see for herself. She tested him with hard questions and spoke to him about all that was in her heart. Solomon answered every one of her questions, never being at a loss for the right explanation.
When they were through, he gave her the grand tour of his domain. Upon seeing his wealth and the splendor of his surroundings, she was rendered speechless and could only declare that his wealth far exceeded the report she heard. She then bestowed upon him 120 talents of gold, which amounted to about $3.5 million, precious stones, and an abundance of rare spices. Solomon, in turn, gave her everything her heart desired and sent her away with a rich bounty of gifts.
It has been speculated that she took all he taught her about God back to her country and influenced her subjects. There is mention of her from an Ethiopian eunuch who later has an encounter with the disciple Philip in the book of Acts. Jesus also referred to the Queen of Sheba in Luke 11:31 saying one like her would put the current generation to shame because she embraced the wisdom of God.
The Queen of Sheba pursued and embraced wisdom. Because of her powerful position and affluence, she could have been a proud woman who was not open to receiving instruction and certainly not open to displaying any signs of vulnerability. However, this was not the case. She was willing to acknowledge what she did not know and openly seek the answers. She was not given to jealousy or covetousness but was able to see the hand of God in all that Solomon was blessed with. She did not go seeking with her hands empty. She went bearing gifts and gave them extravagantly.
Her encounter with a king who knew God and was submitted to His leading gave her a new perspective on her position in life as well as a deeper spiritual understanding.
