The Making of a Diva
Initially, the Shulammite Woman had low self-esteem from working in her brothers’ vineyard, but the realization that the king loved her despite any real or imagined flaws boosted her confidence. She was just a shepherdess with no great royal background—a mere commoner, yet he saw her as a queen!
Well, my sister, God looks at you in the same light. There is nothing common about you to Him. He views you as His divine handiwork and proclaims that you are a “good thing.” Carefully molded and shaped just as you are. It is an insult to our Divine Creator when we fail to see the beauty of what He fashioned when He made us. Would you walk up to a painting and criticize it loudly while the artist was standing there? That’s what we do when we stand in front of the mirror and berate ourselves for all of our perceived flaws. The artist, God Himself, is present, and He is disappointed that you are not taking delight in His creation. Why is it so important to embrace your special brand of beauty and not compare yourself to others? Because the world’s opinion changes with the wind.
The second big step in building self-confidence is surrounding yourself with the right support system. Miss Shulammite had a group of protective brothers and supportive sisters who challenged her when necessary but were also there for her when she needed them. They acknowledged her beauty and virtue and applauded it. They also held her accountable for right living. Everyone needs a support system, not a wrecking crew. Surround yourself with those who see and nurture your gifts and exhort you to be better than you already are.
Third, know the value of your heart, your mind, and your body. Miss Shulammite was self-confident because she had not allowed herself to be used and discarded, emotionally bruised, or mishandled. She found favor because her man could trust her in light of her character.
Div-otion
O heavenly King, because I know You do all things well and I was fashioned by Your loving hands, I affirm today that I am a divine vessel of Your handiwork because of Your presence in my life. Amen.
About this Plan
Deep inside the heart of every woman is a diva just waiting to be released. It lies underneath all of the other things she has supposedly learned about herself. Michelle McKinney Hammond shines a spotlight on fourteen women of the Bible who displayed diva-tude. In the process, she encourages women to embrace their God-given qualities and assets with the understanding that they are fearfully and wonderfully made.
