She Works His Way: 7 Gospel Truths for Working WomenSýnishorn
In the work world, measurables play a big role in helping us determine what’s successful and what’s not, where to invest more and where to pull back, etc. And while there’s certainly nothing wrong that, our spiritual success in life can’t be quantified on the same scales we use at work.
God reveals something really special to us through this parable. We now know how He measures success: good and faithful or wicked and lazy. There are no other options.
Obedience looks like good and faithful service: What am I doing with what God has given me, and how much glory is He getting from it?
Disobedience looks like wicked and lazy service: How little can I get by with doing, or how much glory am I going to get from this?
There is also a glaring difference between the one-talent servant and the five- and two-talent servants: entrusted vs. excuses.
- Are you like the five- and two-talent servants, viewing Him as a loving, giving God who has entrusted you with something?
- Or do you view God as hard and unfair, as the one-talent servant did, believing what you do or don’t do doesn’t really matter to Him?
Honestly, the words of the one-talent servant that might break my heart the most are “Here is what belongs to you.” This servant chose fear over faithfulness. He was afraid that somehow he would disappoint his master, so he chose to do nothing, frozen in fear, instead.
Please remember that God is not after your performance. He is after your heart. And when He gets your heart, obedience is inevitable. Growth cannot be stunted. You will be more than just successful, you’ll be victorious.
Yes, God’s work matters. Attaching God's name to our lives calls us to the highest standard—but that is more about your obedience than your ability.
God, forgive me whenever I chase worldly success over simple obedience. Help me to pursue what I should be busy with right now before pursuing what’s next. And let my actions prove me to be faithfully ready for Your next assignment. Overwhelm me with passion to pursue Your plan for my life. Make Your desires my desires. Amen.
