The Rebuild: Matthew 5-7

DAY 6 OF 39

We live in a fallen world of empty promises and the fabrication of lies. Truthfulness in today's society seems like such a rarity. We sometimes end statements with some sort of vow to add emphasis or credibility.

Jesus warns us against the use of such vows. Jesus is not saying that taking an oath is a sin. God made oaths, Jesus responded when He was called to an oath, and Paul swears by the name of the Lord in his letters. There is a place for taking oaths. But what Jesus is calling us to is a life of truth. To swear by heaven or earth, is to suggest we have some sort of authority over things we cannot control. All authority ultimately derives from God — Lord over all creation. What could we possibly swear by?

With humour, Jesus points out that we cannot even swear by our own head as we cannot even control our hair colour! Instead, we are called to let our “yes" be yes and our “no” be no; to be people of integrity who stand by their word and are known for speaking truth.

Today, ponder this: We are often tempted to alter the truth in various ways as a means of concealing hidden fears or insecurities. What might you need to entrust to Jesus to live a life that reflects the truth of the gospel today? What are some areas of your life you need to ask God to help you be more truthful in? Spend some time in prayer, asking the Holy Spirit to reveal any hidden fears to you, and for help in living a life of gospel truth.

About this Plan

The Rebuild: Matthew 5-7

“You have heard it said…” In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus begins to rebuild and reform our understanding of life in His Kingdom. In Matthew 5-7, He challenges the religious traditions of His day and the competing worldviews of our own. His words are a call to transformation—a new way to live under His reign. As Jesus lays the foundation for His Kingdom, we are invited to tear down false beliefs and build our lives on His truth.
