The Rebuild: Matthew 5-7

DAY 29 OF 39

One day, Jesus was sitting down watching people go by the temple. We shouldn’t be surprised that He would do this. If we’re honest, we probably also enjoy ‘people-watching’. However, on this particular day, an old widow caught Jesus’ attention as she made her way towards the offering boxes. All day, Jesus had witnessed wealthy people drop their large sums in the box. It made an almighty clang as it hit the metallic bottom. They seemed very proud of themselves. It was as if they were doing it for the sake of being noticed for how loud their deep-pocket donations rang out against the steel containers.

In contrast to this, the old widow put in two copper coins. Such a small amount of money didn’t register the slightest note against the steel but it resounded loudly in Christ’s heart! Jesus, knowing the hearts of all who gave, knew that while those rich people put in much, their hearts were shallow and their generosity nothing but a cost-less show. But the widow “out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on” (Mark 12:44). May we be those who give all that we have to the glory of Jesus!

Today, ponder this: It has been said that giving is a heart issue. What does it look like in your life to give money, time, talents and service to the glory of Jesus and for His kingdom?

About this Plan

The Rebuild: Matthew 5-7

“You have heard it said…” In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus begins to rebuild and reform our understanding of life in His Kingdom. In Matthew 5-7, He challenges the religious traditions of His day and the competing worldviews of our own. His words are a call to transformation—a new way to live under His reign. As Jesus lays the foundation for His Kingdom, we are invited to tear down false beliefs and build our lives on His truth.
