ChangeMakers: Unsung Women of the Bible (Vol 2)

DAY 7 OF 10

Tamar

Tamar’s story is introduced abruptly in the midst of Joseph’s narrative, drawing attention to her pivotal role. Though her story is contained in just one chapter, it is filled with events that happen to her, often beyond her control.

Tamar is initially married to Er, Judah’s firstborn son, but Er is so wicked that God strikes him dead. Following Israelite law, Tamar is given to Er’s brother, Onan, to produce an heir for Er. However, Onan is equally wicked and prevents Tamar from bearing a child, leaving her vulnerable. God punishes Onan by taking his life as well.

Judah, instead of taking responsibility for Tamar, wrongfully assumes she is at fault and brands her as dangerous. He promises to give her his youngest son, Shelah, when he is of age but has no intention of keeping that promise. Tamar is sent back to her family, effectively abandoned and given false hope.

When Tamar hears that Judah is traveling, she takes matters into her own hands. Knowing Judah’s negligence and lack of integrity, she confronts him directly. Disguising herself as a prostitute, she secures Judah’s staff and seal—items that would later serve as proof of his identity and responsibility when news of her pregnancy reaches him. When confronted with the evidence, Judah publicly admits his wrongdoing and acknowledges Tamar’s righteousness.

Tamar’s boldness ensures the continuation of Judah’s lineage, which would eventually lead to the birth of King David and, ultimately, Jesus Christ. Her actions, driven by a desire for justice, help turn a story of injustice into one of redemption.

Initially, Judah is seen as callous, suggesting they sell Joseph for profit (Genesis 37:26). However, Tamar’s confrontation sparks a transformation in him. By Genesis 44, Judah humbly offers himself as a substitute for his youngest brother, Benjamin, showing a newfound humility. Tamar’s courage and insistence on justice are key to Judah’s repentance and eventual redemption.

Tamar’s story shows us that God sees the injustices we endure and makes ways for redemption. He invites us to join Him as active participants in rewriting our stories. Through her courage, Tamar became part of God’s greater redemptive plan, reminding us that even in the face of injustice, God’s purposes prevail.

Prayer & Meditation

As you consider the image of Tamar, what stands out to you?

Tamar took bold and unconventional steps to seek justice. Are there moments in your life when you had to act courageously to advocate for yourself or others? Or is God calling you to boldly step out of your comfort zone? Ask God for wisdom and clarity as He guides you in your process.
