ChangeMakers: Unsung Women of the Bible (Vol 2)

DAY 4 OF 10

Zipporah

Yesterday, we learned about the selfless love of Jochebed, Moses’ mother. Today, we focus on another courageous, selfless woman in Moses' life—his wife, Zipporah.

Zipporah was the daughter of Jethro, a Midianite priest. The Midianites were descendants of Abraham but not part of God’s covenant people. When God called Moses to return to Egypt and lead the Israelites out of slavery, Moses resisted, preferring his comfortable life in the desert. Yet, Zipporah encouraged him to obey God’s call and prepared their family for the journey.

During their journey, God became angry with Moses for not having circumcised his sons, a key Jewish tradition. God was ready to kill Moses, but Zipporah intervened. She took immediate action, circumcising their sons to fulfill God’s law and save Moses' life. Her courage and obedience to God saved her husband.

Later, Moses sent Zipporah and their sons back to her father, Jethro. While the reasons aren’t explained, it might have been for their safety or so Moses could focus on his mission. When Jethro brought Zipporah and the children back to Moses, he greeted Jethro warmly but showed no emotion toward Zipporah, despite her key role in supporting him and saving his life.

By this time, Moses had reunited with his siblings Aaron and Miriam, who helped him lead the Israelites. However, their prejudice against the Midianites led them to refer to Zipporah only by her ethnicity, not as Moses’ wife. Despite this, without her bravery and obedience, Moses would not have answered God’s call.

Zipporah’s example teaches us valuable lessons:

  1. God defines our worth—not social structures, cultural expectations, or ethnic background.
  2. God sees and remembers every act of obedience, even when it goes unnoticed by others.

Like Zipporah, we may make sacrifices and encourage others without receiving gratitude or recognition. Yet, Zipporah’s story reminds us that our faithfulness and obedience to God are never overlooked by Him. She remains an example of strength and devotion as we pursue God’s will for our lives and families.

Prayer & Meditation

Have you ever felt unappreciated and invisible? Maybe you’re a mom or wife, and while you love your family, you often feel like they take you for granted.

As you focus on the painting of Zipporah, do you see the sadness in her eyes? Do you feel the weight of heaviness she carries? Perhaps you feel the same emotions. Or maybe your sadness has turned to resentment, bitterness, and anger. Be honest with God. Tell Him how you feel and let Him be your peace, comfort, and joy as He reminds you that you are HIS DAUGHTER, which means you are seen, valued, and loved.
