DAY 3 OF 5

Day 3: Your Kids Need A (Clear) Lens

Equipping Kids With A Biblical Worldview

Our kids begin to develop their worldview from a young age. A worldview is simply how you perceive the world, like a lens in a pair of glasses; if you have tinted or polarized glasses, it affects everything you see. You might also think of worldview as a map that helps us navigate our world.

If we are given a map with faulty directions, we will not make it to our desired destination. Try as we might to follow the map, we will be disappointed by where we end up. When we have a faulty worldview, it is the same. As sincere as we might be, we are likely to end up somewhere other than where we want to be!

Our kids will develop their mental map or worldview based on all their life experiences. While we as parents do not have ultimate control over the lens our kids grow up with, we have a lot of influence over it!

As Christian parents, we have an amazing opportunity to help our kids see the world through the lens of God’s Word. We do this by reading the Bible and applying biblical truths to our own lives. Next, we communicate God’s truths to our kids consistently—applying God’s Word to things going on in our world and in our daily lives.

Romans 12 tells us to avoid being conformed to the ways of the world but to be transformed by renewing the mind. Transformation is something that happens from the inside out. The root word for “transform” is “metamorphoó,” which (you might recognize from “metamorphosis”) is what happens when a caterpillar changes into a butterfly. This process happens when we allow God’s Word to transform us from the inside out.

As parents, we don’t have to have all the answers (none of us do!), but we can make God’s Word our authority. We can lay a solid foundation on biblical truth and teach our kids to line everything up to God’s unchanging wisdom. When we face situations we are unsure of, we can seek wise biblical counsel. When an issue comes up in the news, at school, or in our neighborhood, we can look at it through the lens of Scripture.

A biblical worldview may be one of the greatest gifts we can give our children. Because once they understand the authority of Scripture, they will have the tools they need to navigate all they face well beyond the security of our homes. Let’s give our children the right lens to put on—the lens of biblical truth. Let’s give our kids a map based on what is true and unchanging.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you for giving us the mind of Christ (1 Corinthians 2:16). Thank you for not having to guess what is right or wrong or figure out how to live. We have your Word to guide us into all Truth. Please give us a proper lens to see the world through and then help us to guide our kids to do the same.
