What Your Kids Need Most

DAY 2 OF 5

Day 2: Your Kids Need (Rock-Solid) Security

Security In The Unchanging Word and Nature of God

This world is constantly changing. Laws change, styles change, cultural norms change, and your iPhone was likely outdated the day after you got it. (Amiright?) Our ever-changing world can be confusing to all of us, but it can be especially overwhelming to kids who crave stability and security.

The good news is that, as Christians, we can anchor our hope in the unchanging Truths in God’s Word. While the world may be changing at lightning speed, God’s Word and His principles are timeless. They apply to every part of life for all time!

Still, because we are human, we tend to be swayed by the things of this world. (Or is it just me?) We may get caught up in the latest news, enticed by the latest fads, or influenced by the values of our culture. When parents are wishy-washy in their faith, believing in God but influenced by the world, it causes our kids to feel unstable and insecure. This is what Jesus refers to in Matthew 7 as a foolish man building his house on the sand.

To give our kids true security, we must be intentional about building our lives on the solid foundation of God’s Word. This is what Jesus compares to “a wise man who built his house on the rock” (Matthew 7:24). By making God’s Word the standard in all we do, we are giving our kids the most secure foundation possible.

Practically speaking, we build our lives on the rock by aligning our choices, priorities, and affections with things that matter to God. We go to His Word for direction. We aren’t affected by shifts in our culture. We put our stake in the ground of God’s Word.

One of the areas kids most need security in is their identity. Our culture tells our kids that their value is based on their accomplishments and their popularity, both of which are ever-changing. So, we need to teach our kids about their true identity—their great value as God’s children. An identity that has everything to do with what God has done and will not change no matter what. What a comfort for a child growing up in this world today! (Or an adult, for that matter!)

As we consider what our kids need most, let’s be sure we are making God’s Word the standard for our lives. Perhaps there are some areas we need to realign. Kids will notice the difference between our culture's shifting standards and stable and secure parents. Then, invite your kids up on the rock with you as you stand secure and unshakable amid all the storms of this world.

Prayer: Father, thank you that you never change! Thank you that your Word offers us timeless principles that apply to every area of life. Forgive me for so easily following cultural principles that do not align with your Word. Help me to make your Word my standard. And please help my child(ren) to find what they need most in the security found in being your child and following your unchanging ways.
