Let’s Go: A 5-Day Family Devotional

DAY 2 OF 5

When We Mess Things Up

After God created the world, everything was perfect. But not for long. Have you ever had a day when everything seemed to be going perfectly until someone ruined a project you’d been working hard to finish or you heard a friend talking about you behind your back?

Well, things were going great in the beautiful garden God made. The humans, Adam and Eve, were enjoying a close relationship with God. They had all the things they could ever need, but they still wanted more. God’s enemy, the devil, tricked them into eating fruit from a forbidden tree, the one thing God said not to do. And with this action, sin came into the world.

What really is sin anyway? Sin is anything we do that God says not to do, and sin hurts us and often those around us as well. The Bible includes lots of instructions from God on how to live His way, so how to live your “best life” but for real. And God doesn’t give us rules or instructions just to take away our fun. No way! It’s actually the opposite. Remember, God created us, and He knows us even better than we know ourselves. And He not only knows what’s best for us, but He wants what’s best for us because He loves us.

We live in a world where there is sin, sadness, and brokenness. So as we go throughout our days, we’ll run into hard things and we’ll make mistakes. God knows this. But He doesn’t just throw us in and leave us to ourselves to navigate it all. He gives us His Word. And even as far back as the very first sin, God had a plan to bring transformation to this imperfect world. To renew and restore His people.

God knew He would one day send His Son into our broken world. Someone who would give us all an earthly and heavenly example of what it really means to go.
