Piety
“The seven gifts of the Holy Spirit bestowed upon Christians are wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord.” (CCC1845)
The gift of Piety is also commonly referred to as the gift of Reverence. This gift grows in us the desire to pray. Our prayer becomes devotional, emboldened, worshipful. Our love of the Lord is increased a hundredfold. It creates in us a newness of life, a love of prayer, a worshipping heart. As we grow in our gifts of the Holy Spirit and of prayer we experience a stronger interior life, ruled by our love of Christ, who is our “gentle guest and friend who inspires, guides, corrects, and strengthens this life.” (CCC1697)
Times of adoration of the Blessed Sacrament can really open our hearts to Jesus and to the full reception of this gift in particular. The gift of piety really draws us into a loving relationship with all three persons of the trinity and also focuses outwards in love towards others. When we truly love God we cannot help but share that love with the people we meet.
As you pray today you might want to take some time before the Blessed Sacrament or to go to Mass and receive Holy Communion. You might also want to take this opportunity to make your confession and receive the sacrament of Reconciliation.
