"The Friendzone"

So, we’ve come to our final day in our relationships devotional, and today we’re going to be looking at the topic of friendship. In the book of Ecclesiastes, it says that our lives consist of seasons, and that we need to be ready for the different seasons that life brings, as each one will be different. 

When it comes to relationships, there will be seasons when we are single, there will be seasons when we have a boyfriend or girlfriend, and there will be a season when we are married. What endures through every one of these seasons, however, is that in each one we will have friendships.

The fact that friendships remain through every season shows us how important it is to know and understand how to build good, solid friendships that set us up to win in every sphere of life. The Bible gives us some keys to good friendships, and by looking to God’s word we can build lasting friendships that will endure through whatever season we go through.

At the beginning of the Bible, we are told a story where God creates man and says, “it is not good for the man to be alone.”  As humans, we have not been created to do life alone, isolated from the world. Instead, we have been made for community; we have been made to build relationships with other people and do life together. That’s why we thrive in relationships and why we feel fulfilled when we are interacting with other people. It is so important that we recognise the value of friendship, and place value on the friends we do life with.

We can follow the example of Christ, who looked first to serve others before he was served. We too can treat our friends in that way, with the perspective of how we can serve them first. Jesus also remained the same with whoever he came across. His character didn’t change. We can also make sure that we stay true to who we are, not trying to be like anyone else. If we do this, our friendships will flourish and we will build strong and lasting relationships.
