Together In The Journey

DAY 5 OF 14

The Rescuer

“We are nothing like God, even though an adoptive parent symbolically plays a similar role in pursuing, rescuing, and loving a child. Scott and I played that role in this story of Lyla’s adoption. But on the contrary, this whole adoption process has shown me how completely opposite I am of God! I have been extremely impatient, angry, doubtful, faithless, scared, whiny, rude, grumbly, and even emotionally unstable. I mean, at times I acted like a little kid who didn’t get her way.” (Chapter 10)

I want to deliver a warning to adoptive parents. We, during the adoption process, can easily fall into and casually accept a lie from the enemy in regards to our adoption. It is the very lie that Satan himself believed: that we are the same as God. I know we are created in His image, and that as His children can inherit His traits, but, we are all fallen creatures, and we should not be worshipped. Only the one true God deserves our devotion and worship.

Here is the warning: don’t make yourself an idol.

I know you are thinking, “How in the world am I making myself an idol when my family is choosing to do something that is radical, grueling, and a picture of the Gospel!?!”

Somewhere and somehow, in the midst of your journey, this evil little tick will land on you, and if you are not careful, will attach himself to you and come along for the ride. This little tick is the not-so-little issue of pride.

During your process, people will shower you with praise. If you are not careful, you will begin to believe these things about yourself. You will begin to carry the badge around of “Look at what my family is doing. Aren’t we awesome?” Subtly, replacing the focus from God to yourselves.

This can be tricky since we play the role of rescuer in our adoption story, but in reality, this process will show you how different from God you really are and how desperately you need Him. I discovered several traits about myself that I did not like because they are sinful. I saw ungodly emotions and responses when our undertaking got exhausting.

I know full well, I am not God and I have a LONG way to go. I encourage you to guard your hearts and to not allow the enemy of pride to seep in. He is the true Rescuer!

Have you ever found yourself trying to be someone's rescuer? Are you letting pride creep into your heart and slowly nudge God from His deserved position as #1 in your life? Pray now and seek Him with all your heart. Ask the Holy Spirit what area(s) in your life you need to repent of pride.
