Godless Ambition
And they said, Come, let us build us a city and a tower whose top reaches into the sky and let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered over the whole earth. (Genesis 11:4 AMPC)
What is the reason behind your quest to build a billion-dollar business? You see, the motive matters more than anything else.
Given the technology available in their time, the people in this Bible story were taking on an extremely audacious goal; they were going to build a skyscraper. The only problem was that the foundation of the skyscraper was laid on their massive ego: “let us make a name for ourselves,” they said.
Ego is the worst kind of material to build a foundation upon. It is in the same category as covetousness. Sadly, many leading businesses and corporations we see today are built on just these sorts of foundations: the burning desire by their founders to be famous, or to make a lot of money. But the believer cannot do so. He has to build on something more enduring.
As the Lord said, “So everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts upon them [obeying them] will be like a sensible (prudent, practical, wise) man who built his house upon the rock. And the rain fell and the floods came and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock." (Matthew 7:24-25 AMPC).
The other man is, of course, the foolish. The man who builds a business that ignores Christ and His Words considers them only relevant to 'spiritual' matters. When the winds came with the floods, the house that that man built came tumbling down.
Today, examine your heart, and if you have built your business on poorly disguised ego and greed, repent and ask the Lord to help you find a new motivation for serving Him through your business.
