Making Sense of it All
The underlying principle in managing staff is to understand the privilege of influence that God has given you and to appreciate the critical need of exploiting that influence for the benefit of the Kingdom.
While there will understandably be business goals focused on delivering goods and services, the overarching goal for the Christian business leader must always be how to influence his team and the world for Christ.
In the context of a workplace, this goal is perhaps better achieved by living out the life of Christ than by just preaching it. Indeed, no matter how eloquent you may be at preaching, if you “muzzle the ox that treads out the corn” and run the business like a slave camp where targets are set without giving staff the necessary training and tools, your message will ring very hollow.
However well or badly you may have managed your people so far, honestly seeking the Lord for guidance in the following areas should certainly help improve your results.
- Ask the Lord what He will have you do in order that you may be able to attract truly faithful and talented staff.
- Ask the Lord to show you in what ways you can share the blessings that the business brings more generously with your team.
- If there are people on your team who are performing below expectations, ask the Lord how you may help them to improve their performance.
- If there are people who you feel impressed to let go, ask the Lord to clarify if and how you should go about it.
