30 Days In The Gospel Of Mark

DAY 19 OF 30

Thought:

In today’s passage, Jesus predicts His death and resurrection a third time. He describes it in more specific detail. In the coming days, we will see how all of these details Jesus predicted came true. After Jesus predicts His death and resurrection, some of His disciples ask Him if they can sit at His left and right hand in His glory. Sitting at the King’s left and right hand are high places of honor. The disciples wanted to know if they could be the best. (Sound familiar? Look back at Day 17!) Jesus explains that to be great, His disciples must be like a servant to everyone. They must be a servant like Jesus was a servant. Jesus explains that He came to give His life as a ransom for many. Jesus came to die for everybody to pay for their sins. Jesus is so humble He was willing to be our ransom. If we, Christians, want to be great, then we should be humble like Jesus and put others before ourselves.

1. Where were Jesus and the disciples headed? Why were His followers afraid?

2. What do James and John want Jesus to do for them? Why did this offend the other disciples?

3. How does Jesus respond to James and John’s request?

4. What did Jesus come to do?

Engage:

Make a list of the things Jesus says will happen to Him in Mark 10:33-34. Keep it somewhere you won’t lose it. As you continue through the 30-day challenge, check off the things Jesus predicted would happen as they occur. Write the verse reference next to it so you know where in the Bible it happens.

For example: “Jesus will be spat on.”  Mark 15:19

Deeper Waters:

Look back at the passage from Day 17 (Mark 9:30-37). What similarities do you notice? What differences do you see?
