Six Days With Spurgeon

DAY 1 OF 6

John 21:12 - "Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” None of the disciples ventured to question Him, “Who are You?” knowing that it was the Lord."

Come, and eat breakfast. It is a phrase we have heard so many times in our lives. It is also a phrase the disciples must have heard as well. And yet when they heard it that one morning – a morning fresh like the dew that had collected on the ground, this phrase stopped them in their tracks. The voice which called out to them to dine belonged to the same Man whom they had witnessed die. Only days before. And yet He bid them to come and eat with them. How could it be?

The resurrection of Jesus is an invitation. Not only to the weary and saddened disciples on the Sea of Galilee that day but also to each of us. It is an invitation to an intimacy with Jesus unlike any other. To come and dine with someone always implies that the dining will take place at the same table. It means to sit side by side, and even to lean your head upon a close friend’s shoulder from time to time. To come and dine means being brought into the home itself, under the banner of redeeming love and acceptance. It means fellowship. Joy. Laughter. Delight.

When Jesus called out to the disciples to come and dine with Him, and when He likewise calls out to each of us, He offers us more than a feast, He offers us Himself.

As Peter had only recently denied him bitterly, Jesus had come to restore Peter to Himself and to ministry. Jesus offers restoration and fellowship to you and me as well. It is a depth of love which reason itself cannot even fathom.
