Josh 1.3 – ‘I will give you every place where you set your feet, as I promised Moses’

Reflection

Joshua 1 is a core passage for us at Stronger Network. It's a powerful moment in the life of the people of God, and one that speaks to us today. After 40 years in the wilderness, their leader Moses has died. Joshua has now taken over the mantle of leadership and is poised and ready to lead the people into God’s promised land. In front of him is the promised land, with so much potential and opportunity. Behind him, the wilderness, with so much disappointment and difficulty...

The only thing stopping Joshua and the Israelites from moving forward is a step of faith. And God meets Joshua right there and reminds him, ‘I will give you every place where you set your foot’ (v.3). We know how the following chapters unfold. It was a step of faith that led them through the Jordan on dry ground, it was a step of faith that led them around the walls of Jericho, and it was a step of faith that led them to conquer the land of Canaan.

We of course have the benefit of hindsight, looking backwards and seeing how the story unfolded. Joshua in the moment was looking forward and didn’t have a blueprint for how it was all going to work out. He had to rely on the faithfulness of God. Isn’t that so true for us today and each day? Breakthroughs are often built on small but bold steps of faith, and as we put our faith and trust in Jesus, following him step by step, we can expect signs of God's Kingdom every place and everywhere we go.

It’s so moving to think of the Church, the gathered and scattered people of God stepping into their God given calling every week, whether that’s online, in business, in workplaces, neighbourhoods, leadership positions and networks. God’s Kingdom comes as we step into the different spheres of influence that God has placed us, and that’s why Stronger Network exists, to equip and encourage people through conferences and content to cheer people on as they seek to be salt and light in every place of society in 2025.

What is the step of faith that God invites you to take today? What is the vision in front of you, or the promise that God has stirred in you? Take a step of faith towards it today.

Prayer Point

Father, thank you that you are faithful. Thank you that I can find fresh courage in you to move forward, a step at a time and trust you for the outcome. Lord, have your way. Help me move my feet even when I find it difficult. In Jesus’ name I pray.
