DAY 6 OF 7

Identity as a Creative

It’s very easy as a creative to place our identity within our craft. It’s more natural for us to say, “I’m a musician,” instead of “I play music.” It’s often the reason why we struggle with receiving criticism when it comes to our work or art. Most Christians would say that their identity is rooted in Christ, but when something they’ve poured their heart and soul into is stripped away, the truth is quickly revealed.

I realized early in my journey that pride and approval of man were the driving forces behind all my creative endeavors. Let’s just be honest, I wanted to be famous for something. I wanted influence and for people to view me as important. If your desire as a creative is to just gain influence or impress people, you will never be fulfilled.

Even in creativity, when you know you’ve created something that’s honest to the Lord and to yourself, it doesn’t matter what others think. The beautiful thing is when we minister to the Lord solely out of a place of intimacy and sacrifice, the Lord naturally ushers us into the position we need to be. It’s okay to make goals and desire influence for kingdom impact, but we can never forget the importance of the secret place in His presence. It’s what guides and fuels us as creatives.

Yes, you were designed to create, but your creation is not who you are. No matter what you create, YOU are fearfully and wonderfully made! Don’t place your worth in your work. Only the Lord can reveal your true value.
