DAY 23 OF 86

DEUTERONOMY 23-24:
In yesterday’s reading in Deuteronomy, we read an odd collection of regulations: Cleansing the land from unsolved murder, marrying a captive woman after a war, rights of a first-born son when a man has more than one wife, the responsibility of helping neighbors, and various problems concerning adultery.

PSALM 61:
Today’s psalm, number 61, is one I love to sing. It seems to me that each line contains a gem to ponder. When David talks about ‘increasing the days of the king’s life’, he is really talking about himself. Feel free to make the pronouns in this prayer appropriate for yourself.

ACTS 15a:
Yesterday in Acts 14, we heard of the incredible turn of events for Paul and Barnabas. At one moment they were hailed as gods, but after a very short time, Paul was stoned. As they tell the believers, “We have to go through many hardships before we enter God's kingdom in heaven.” For Paul and Barnabas, this seems to be an understatement.

For our prayer, I'm going to read the words of Isaac Watts great hymn entitled ‘Am I a Soldier of the Cross’. This was first published in 1721, and Watts wrote this in conjunction with a sermon he was giving on 1st Corinthians 16:13. “Be alert! Stand firm in the faith! Be brave and strong.” I will only read the four most commonly sung verses. Prayerfully listen to these words.

Am I a soldier of the Cross—
 A follower of the Lamb?
And shall I fear to own His cause,
Or blush to speak His name?

Must I be carried to the skies
 On flowery beds of ease,
While others fought to win the prize
 And sailed through bloody seas?

Are there no foes for me to face?
Must I not stem the flood?
Is this vile world a friend to grace,
To help me on to God?

Since I must fight if I would reign,
 Increase my courage, Lord!
I’ll bear the toil, endure the pain,
 Supported by Thy Word.

Taken from this site, where I see that the words have been modernized a little bit.
