God’s Promises to Pray-ers: I Care
I. Love. You.
We are all starving to hear those three words. They are consumable. We burn them up to keep going in a hostile and cruel world, to keep going when our own self-doubts and self-hatred gnaw at our self-confidence. We can never hear those words enough.
How could you want to pray to a God who didn’t love you? You might bargain with such a god or try to pay him off or earn some points with rituals, but you couldn’t bare your soul.
The One who invites your prayers made himself low for you. He emptied himself, taking the very nature of a servant. He was born in a barn, lived simply, taught the Word, bore scorn, was arrested and unjustly convicted, and endured the scourge and the cross in order to break the power of sin’s curse over you. On the third day, he triumphantly rose from death and promises a similar resurrection to all who trust and believe in him.
Why did he do all of those things? Because he loves you. And so you can “cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you” (1 Peter 5:7).
