It is easy to feel a bit sorry for Joseph, he must have felt so hurt and upset when he found out that Mary was pregnant and, having not heard anything from God himself, as she had.
We can see that under the law in normal circumstances in the book of Deuteronomy that Joseph had the right to divorce Mary as he was planning to... but these were not normal circumstances!
Despite how strange it was for his fiancee to be pregnant with the Messiah, he was considerate of her and never intended to publicly shame her despite his doubts.
He obeyed the angel, married Mary, and took care of his family.
Joseph is not mentioned a lot in scripture, but the verses that do mention him show how he was a man of obedience and was considerate towards others. In this Christmas season, let’s reflect on how we can be daily obedient to the Spirit and be actively considerate of others. Even if we don't get a central role in the story, our roles are still vital in the big picture of God's plan for humanity.
